The best way to log homemade food is not the same for Sunday meal prep, scrambled eggs, a one-off stir-fry and your friend's lasagna.
The method should follow two questions:
- How much information do you have?
- How often will you need this meal again?
Those two questions usually tell you how much setup is worth doing.
Method 1: weighed recipe — best for repeat batches
If you cook a large batch and plan to eat it several times, weigh the major ingredients, calculate the recipe total, weigh the finished batch and portion by cooked weight.
Advantages:
- strongest everyday precision
- easy repeat portions
- good macro control
- initial effort is reused across meals
Disadvantages:
- setup time
- annoying for spontaneous cooking
- recipe needs updating when ingredients change
This is ideal for meal prep.
Method 2: major-component logging — best for simple plated meals
For chicken, rice, vegetables and sauce, you can track the components without building a recipe.
Advantages:
- flexible
- reasonably informative
- easy to adjust one component
Disadvantages:
- still requires several entries in traditional trackers
- hidden oils and sauces can be missed
This works well when the foods remain visually distinct.
Method 3: saved meal/template — best for recurring combinations
If you eat the same breakfast or lunch frequently, create it once and reuse it.
Advantages:
- very fast after setup
- consistent assumptions
- easy to adjust one variable
Disadvantages:
- becomes inaccurate if the actual meal changes but the template does not
A saved meal should be a shortcut, not a reason to stop noticing meaningful changes.
Method 4: natural-language estimate — best for spontaneous homemade food
Describe the meal the way you would explain it to another person:
Ground turkey taco bowl with about a cup of rice, black beans, salsa, cheese and a small scoop of guacamole.
Advantages:
- fast
- captures meals that do not map cleanly to databases
- easy to include hidden ingredients or known portions
Disadvantages:
- depends on reasonable assumptions
- less precise than a weighed recipe
This is often the best tradeoff for improvised dinners.
Method 5: photo + context — best when describing the plate is annoying
Take a photo and add the details the image cannot reveal.
Advantages:
- fastest way to preserve visual information
- useful for multiple components
- good for restaurant-like homemade plates
Disadvantages:
- portion and hidden-ingredient uncertainty remains
- mixed dishes can be difficult
Research on image-based dietary assessment shows meaningful progress but also substantial variability in calorie and volume estimates across systems and meal types.[1]

You can mix methods inside one meal.
Do not choose a high-friction method merely because it appears more serious
The best logging system is not the one that extracts the maximum possible labor from the user.
Dietary self-monitoring can be useful, but adherence commonly declines, and lower-burden approaches have been studied specifically because tracking effort affects engagement.[2][3]
If recipe construction makes you stop logging, it is not the best method for every meal.
Do not choose estimation when exact data is easy
The opposite is also true.
If you weighed the turkey or the package gives exact nutrition, use that information. Low friction should not mean discarding strong evidence.
The most useful workflow combines exact information where available with estimation where necessary.
