Most calorie trackers can store calories.
The important difference is how they expect you to turn a real meal into an entry.
An app built around packaged-food searches may be excellent for someone who eats many repeat products. A recipe-heavy tracker may be ideal for meticulous meal prep. A photo or natural-language tracker may be better for someone who cooks improvisationally and eats out often.
Choose the workflow before you choose the feature list.
1. How do you usually eat?
Start with your meals, not the app store screenshots.
Mostly packaged or repeat foods
Prioritize:
- strong food database
- barcode scanning
- recent/frequent foods
- saved meals
Mostly homemade food
Prioritize:
- recipe tools if you want precision
- easy component editing
- text or photo capture if you want lower friction
- clear handling of unknown portions

Mixed lifestyle
Look for a tracker that accepts several forms of evidence rather than forcing every meal through one workflow.
2. What level of precision do you want?
Some users genuinely enjoy weighing food and maintaining recipes.
Others mainly want directional awareness and macro targets.
Neither is inherently superior.
Ask whether the app makes it easy to be precise when you know the details and practical when you do not.
A tracker that only works under ideal measurement conditions may create blank spots in the exact situations where your food becomes less structured.
3. Can you inspect and change AI estimates?
If an app uses AI, check whether the estimate is editable.
Food-image research shows that food recognition, portion estimation and nutrient estimation are separate problems with different error sources.[1][2]
Useful questions include:
- Can I change the portion?
- Can I change calories/macros directly?
- Does the app show what it thought was on the plate?
- Can I add context the photo missed?
- Does it distinguish an estimate from a user-confirmed value?
An AI estimate should make logging faster, not remove user control.
4. How does it handle homemade food?
This is a revealing test.
Open the app and imagine logging:
Homemade turkey chili with beans, tomatoes, peppers, some olive oil, cheese and a little rice.
Does the workflow require:
- building a recipe?
- searching several components?
- choosing a generic chili entry?
- typing one description?
- taking a photo?
Choose the amount of work you are willing to repeat.
5. Does it support the targets you care about?
If you care mostly about protein, make sure protein is visible and easy to interpret throughout the day.
If you care about calories and all three macros, check whether the app supports custom targets and running totals.
If you need micronutrient or medically specific tracking, choose a product designed for that level of detail rather than assuming a simplified meal logger will substitute for it.
6. What happens to your data?
Food logs can become a long personal record.
Check:
- Can you export the data?
- Can you delete the account yourself?
- Are meal photos retained?
- Does the product explain its privacy practices clearly?
- Are you locked into a proprietary history you cannot retrieve?
These questions matter more after six months than they do during onboarding.
7. Does the app use motivation mechanics you want?
Some products include streaks, social feeds, coaching, badges or programs.
Those can be useful if you want them.
They can also feel distracting if all you want is a quiet record.
Choose the behavioral style intentionally rather than accepting whatever comes bundled with the calorie counter.
8. How quickly can you log a difficult meal?
Do one practical test before subscribing:
Try to log a meal you actually eat that has no barcode and no standard recipe.
Time the experience.
The difficult case will tell you more than logging a protein bar.
